Presentation - Laurie Fischer - Mergers and Acquisition (RIM Practice competency)
Mergers and Acquisitions: Threat or Opportunity?

Agenda

Minutes

Mergers, acquisitions, divestitures and spin-offs present significant challenges for the Records and Information Management professional.  Although these types of organizational changes may appear threatening when first announced, the challenges presented by major re-structurings and re-organizations should be considered a significant opportunity for the RIM professional. Who else can help guide the organization to address key records-related considerations that will have lasting impact on the organization?

Some of those key considerations and action items for the RIM professional include: defining records ownership and records custodianship, clarifying future liability that impacts accessibility to needed records, identifying records management program components, staffing and organizational fit, etc.  A RIM professional's comprehensive due diligence, transition planning and records management vision for the "new" organization can only result in an increased understanding of the importance of records management within the organization.

Kahn Consulting, Inc., and ARMA recently conducted a survey entitled “GRC, E-Discovery and RIM: State of the Industry.” The study confirmed the importance of RIM as a strategic initiative that every institution must undertake—as respondents indicated that only about 15% of employees understood their discovery obligations, while only 21% understood their records retention requirements. Please feel free to make the Kahn Survey available to your members. If you want to use the survey data in your Chapter newsletter, please contact Larry Wescott at lwescott@Kahnconsultinginc.com.

You can learn more about the survey at http://www.kahnconsultinginc.com/library/surveys.html.
